HISTORY
Cecelia's world is in the Regency/late Georgian period of England in every aspect except one: there are werewolves. This is a great secret and there are very few werewolves left in England at all. There are different causes for this. Many chose not to have offspring and pass on their curse, and many were hunted down and killed, thought to be regular wolves. As wolf hunting was popular in Great Britain throughout the medieval age, wolves were thought to be extinct by the time of Henry VII. Yet werewolves lived on, confining themselves to the deepest caves or the cellars of their lonely, isolated houses during the full moon. Rumors persisted that wolves were still to be found because their howls could be heard, but by Cecelia's time, there are less than fifty werewolves left. They no longer live in packs, and are usually isolated people.

Cecelia's place in the world begins with a bite. She was Cecelia Rutledge, a gentleman's daughter, who at age nineteen was set upon by a werewolf, who bit into her shoulder. Her screams roused the household and the creature fled as men ran for the garden behind her house. A search of the woods was planned, but after seeing the bite on Cecelia, they were too frightened to look. She thrashed around in pain and her body began to shift under the light of the full moon. Those that witnessed it felt the devil himself must have marked her, and as her teeth lengthened into sharp canines, everyone fled into the house.

Cecelia had no idea what she did that night, but the next morning she stumbled back to the house, naked and afraid. Her parents locked her in her room, afraid of what she'd become and not knowing what to do with her. They didn't realize that she could hear them through the walls and when her father suggested she be put down she broke down her door and ran out of the house into the woods. It was there that she was set upon again, but this time by a man who put a soaked cloth over her mouth. When she came to, she was much deeper into the woods and the man explained himself.

His name was Thomas Wynn and he was a werewolf. Attacking her had felt natural at the time, but now he was greatly ashamed of the curse he'd brought down upon her and wished to make amends. He would take her to his house and there teach her how to cope with being a werewolf. She was too old to be his ward and so they would have to marry to keep up the ruse. It took a great deal of arguing to convince Cecelia, but in the end she knew there was no other way to go about it, so she agreed. They wed before returning to Bantry House, where her lessons began. As can only be expected, Cecelia did not take to her new life or new husband at first. She very much resented what was done to her and in those early months her demeanor was icy and at times not even civil. The two argued quite a lot, and Cecelia was known to wreck entire rooms with her new werewolf strength. Eventually, her rage quieted down into an irritated acceptance that this was now her life.

Over a year after arriving at Bantry House, Cecelia began to warm to her husband and see them as kindred spirits as they were both cursed with this life, and it was better to deal with it together than alone. They were a very unsocial couple and were known around the neighborhood as being distant, but civil. They rarely attended social functions and never held any on their own estate. Such a life tended to be lonely to Cecelia, especially since they didn't go to town (London) for the social season. With really only Thomas for company, Cecelia doted on him to an obsessive degree, having no other outlet for her attention. Since Thomas bore the guilt of having turned her, he also bore her stifling affections until he finally decided on a break. Over a decade after their marriage, he went up to Scotland for a hunting holiday, leaving Cecelia behind with the servants for the first time. As the full moon would occur while he was gone, arrangements were made to house him in the cellars of an abandoned castle. Unfortunately, the dilapidated state of the cellar made escape easy, and his servants fled lest they be eaten. Thomas terrorized the village in werewolf form until he was brought down with numerous gunshot wounds, at which point he shifted back into his human form. Naturally the villagers were hysterical, but investigators on the scene sent from Glasgow wrote them off as having seen things and the news quieted down when the authorities wanted to bring someone to trial for the murder of a gentleman.

Returning home, the Wynn household servants had to relay the terrible news to Cecelia, who locked herself in her chambers and refused to come out. Rumors swirled in society about the debauchery Thomas Wynn had engaged in up in Scotland that had led to him being murdered while nude, and Cecelia feared for her life, should anyone actually believe the wild tales of his being a werewolf and assume the same of her. For months afterwards, she never left the house and fell into a deep despair.
